The Health Benefits of a Superfood

Superfood is basically a popular marketing term for unpronounceable food said to confer multiple health benefits attributed to an extraordinary nutrient quantity. The term is generally not used by health experts, nutritionists and dietitians, most of whom strongly dispute that any foods possess the much heralded health advantages claimed by their proponents. Some people might use the term superfood as an explanation for consuming a certain kind of food or drinking a specific beverage. However, there is no universally accepted meaning for the term.

The majority of the foods we eat are either partially or wholly refined. Refined means that the substance has been changed from its original state, and has lost much of the nutritional value. Whole grains, fruits and vegetables, when taken in their natural form, will provide good health, but they must be eaten in their original form and not artificially flavored, treated with preservatives, or heated to extremes. These foods can also be cooked into a tasty snack, although they tend to lose much of their nutritional value in the cooking process.

The food industry has recognized the importance of quinoa and other grains that contain significant amounts of protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. This is why many quinoa dishes are featured on menus and in cookbooks. The superfood craze has started to spread into the food industry and companies such as General Mills and Whole Foods Market have introduced a line of quinoa-based products. Many health conscious individuals have started to buy quinoa and other grain products because they recognize them as healthy and delicious alternatives to regular white bread, pasta and cereal.

Unlike other superfoods, acai berry contains a lot of antioxidants. Antioxidants work to fight off free radicals that damage cells and cause disease. These antioxidants are even more important than vitamins A, C and E in keeping the body functioning properly and preventing illness. Free radicals cause the skin to sag and wrinkles to appear. Acai berries contain about 25 times more antioxidants than any other known food.

Macadamia nuts are another superfood with impressive health benefits. They are an excellent source of linoleic acid, a type of fatty acid that plays a role in preventing heart disease. Other important fats include omega 3 fatty acids, which help lower cholesterol. Eating foods such as macadamia nuts is a great way to get the amount of these essential fats that you need.

Perhaps the best superfood is dark chocolate. Studies have shown that it contains healthy antioxidants and has a high fiber content. Dark chocolate is also known to contain flavonoids, which have a strong effect on reducing the risk of heart disease. Some of the other health benefits of this delicious treat include improved circulation and reduced blood pressure. Try eating dark chocolate instead of your regular milk shake or coffee shake.
